Target Applications Motivating OpenLayers
Two types of target applications motivate OpenLayers:
- Free tools that help everyone use geography on the Web
- Commercial tools built on top of OpenLayers by contractors and companies like MetaCarta

To help everyone use geography more easily and more effectively, OpenLayers has several target applications in its sights:
- MapViewer Service makes it easy for anyone to paste a dynamic map into a blogs, homepages, and other HTML document -- it allows users to post their own data on top of the map easily... in-progress
- MediaWikiExtension helps Wikipedia sites put maps in their pages in-progress
- Integration with DR systems http://www.sahana.lk
