The OpenLayers Project Definition

OpenLayers makes it easy to put a dynamic map in any web page, using geographic data loaded from any source. MetaCarta developed the initial version of OpenLayers, and gave it to the public to further the use of geographic information of all kinds. OpenLayers is completely free, Open Source JavaScript, published under the BSD License.

OpenLayers supports data layers based on OGC standards like WMS and WFS, Open Source tiling systems like WorldWind and ka-Map, commercial data sources like Google and Virtual Earth, and more. OpenLayers features a JavaScript API which is inspired by the Google Maps API. Support for controls, markers, popups, and more is available.

The project seeks to foster collaboration between Open Source developers and commercial enterprises. The OpenLayers project seeks to avoid infringing anyone's intellectual property or terms of use. Should a conflict arise, the SteeringCommittee will remove the offending components.
