    17 Apparently, the first Where 2.0 conference inspired MetaCarta to implement open source software equivalent to Google Maps. A rewrite was made by Christopher Schmidt, then newly hired, in the spring of 2006 and OpenLayers was first released before the second Where 2.0 conference, which took place on June 13-14, 2006.
