The getBoundsFromBaseLayer function was an ill-advised attempt to hack support for Google Maps overlays into OpenLayers. In Version 2.5, this support was marked as deprecated, owing to the new Commercial Mercator support being the preferred way to display WMS overlays over Google or other commercial data.
