I don't see how this is possible. With just the units and data in DD, should we reproject to be able to calculate a distance? If so, to what projection? Should we do great circle calculations? If you are doing your work in MapScript, you have the flexibility to project to something that is reasonable for your situation and get a number you expect. Any guess MapServer tries to make is going to be wrong for somebody.
