Starting a HOWTO would probably not have required much more than what has been placed in the mapObj and layerObj docs... except that now we have copies of the same info in two places instead of just a single "debugging/tuning howto" that could have evolved over time to contain tips and tricks for troubleshooting and tuning mapfiles, etc. That's just my opinion of course, you're the one maintaining the docs so I'll leave it up to you.

I've created a MapServer Debugging Guide. http://www.mapserver.org/optimization/debugging.html Please let me know if there are missing sections. I tried very hard to make sure the document covers as much as possible. I think it's a very useful document.

Jeff's page seems to be very comprehensive, so I am closing this bug. If someone has objections, please reopen with instructions for how to improve. Currently there is some duplication of information in the LAYER-DEBUG and MAP-DEBUG, but I guess that is a good thing.

I just finished updating the mapfile reference with notes on debugging for ticket#2627 (MAP level - http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/docs/reference/mapfile/mapObj/ and LAYER level - http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/docs/reference/mapfile/layer).
I wasn't thinking of creating another howto. In my mind those MAP and LAYER descriptions in the mapfile reference, which also point to RFC 28, are sufficient enough. Agree? Disagree?
