- Description:
- Abstract:
- "In cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and West Virginia Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board (SAMB), the WV GIS Technical Center converted the vector SAMB elevation files to a raster Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for inclusion into the 1/9th arc second layer of the National Elevation Dataset (NED). The main processes were TIN generation, TIN to DEM conversion, DEM hydro enforcement, and visual inspection.
Two main software applications were used to perform the conversion and editing tasks: ESRI ArcGIS software for pre-processing the elevation and hydrographic SAMB vector files, and for generating the TINs and DEMs; and Delta3D software for enforcing drainage of every DEM. ArcGIS programming scripts were utilized to automate most of the procedures required to create the TINs and DEMs. In the Delta3D software, a combination of automated scripts and manual editing routines were utilized for the drainage enforcement. The final DEMs, organized according to the USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle index, were delivered to the USGS Mid-Mapping Continent Center for certification and publication into the NED."

- Process_Step:
- Process_Description:
- The grid data provided by WV SAMB was processed by USGS/EROS . The DEM formatted file was converted to a ESRI GRID in geographic coordinates using the assemble software with a cell size of 1/9 decimal degree. These grids were visually inspected for erroneous grid cells, and if necessary, the process was repeated to remove all erroneous points. During this processing a shapefile of the data footprint was produced. A shaded-relief grid with an azimuth of 315, elevation of 45 and a z-factor of 0.00003 was produced for additional QC and for viewing with the Seamless Data Distribution System. When the QC was completed the grids were loaded into ArcSDE with ArcGIS 9.1 ArcCatalog.
