GDAL/OGR Annual Report 2015

  • Period covered by report: Jan-Nov 2015

Key Accomplishments

  • The major milestone of 2015 for the GDAL project was the release of the long-mentionned GDAL 2.0.0 version. This version includes 11 new drivers for raster and vector formats, improves in significant ways several of the existing ones, implements 10 new feature RFCs and brings its usual set of bug fixes and performance improvements. Among those, one can highlight the read/write raster support for the OGC GeoPackage format, support for curve geometries, unification of GDAL (raster) and OGR (vector) drivers and datasets, 64-bit integer attributes... Extensive details can be found on the GDAL 2.0.0 release news page.
  • In addition to this major version, three maintenance releases 1.11.2, 1.11.3 and 2.0.1 have been issued, fixing around 170 defects.
  • The Google Summer of Code 2015 edition was the opportunity for Faza Mahamood to work on making available GDAL C/C++ utilities as functions callable from C, C++ and all the supported bindings languages.
  • During the FOSS4G 2015 Seoul code sprint there were some reorganisation of sources tree, testing CMake ExternalProject features and CTest.
  • Kurt Schwehr joined the Project Steering Committee, and Even Rouault was appointed as his chair.

GDAL was presented at FOSS4G North America 2015 and FOSS4G Europe 2015.
