The usual practice seems to be to set the srsDimension attribute on the gml:posList element, but in some situations (which are valid according to the schemas), it is also set on the LineString element. One of those examples is the GML 3.3 spec ( https://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=46568 ). Another one is the output of a WFS server : http://titest01.powel.no/GeminiMapServer/GeminiVADemo.wfs?SERVICE=WFS&VERSION=1.1.0&REQUEST=GetFeature&TYPENAME=gemini:VA_LINE

Fixed in GDAL trunk (r24413). Not sure this is needed in 1.9
