Perhaps this is documented somewhere, but libgdal.a is not installed by 'make install.' I'm trying to build a very minimal version using the attached configure command, so perhaps that has some effect. Nonetheless, it took me a bit to realize I needed to manually copy the lib.

I'm not sure that it is documented anywhere, but I do not consider it desirable to install the static library. For the rare situations where it is desired, it can be manually installed or used from the build tree.
