Description
If you take the attached file and run the command "gdaladdo -r average N020W116_x2_trueMarble.tif 3 6 12 24 48 96" artifacts appear in the upper left of the dataset. The artifacts are about 16px high, and a total of 512px wide. I've seen the artifacts in black, reddish, solid, and blocky.

I can't see any artifact in the image you've provided (I use OpenEV). Maybe it is your viewer that doesn't support big images with overviews ?

upgrading to 1.6.0 fixed this for me (using the UbuntuGIS packages for Hardy)

Closing then. Reopen if reproduced with recent GDAL (1.6.1 e.g.)
Attachment won't work (file too large), so here's a URL:
http://ueod-globe.net/trueMarble/N020W116_x2_trueMarble.tif.gz
I should also mention that I'm running GDAL 1.5.1 on a Mac running 10.5.
