The CGNS is a 3 tiered framework of data, application, and information services. The CGNS WMS allows for custom cartographic styling through the OGC Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) Specification. Its purpose is to store names that have been approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) and to make these authoritative records available for government and public use. The subset of the CGNDB data which will be served up consists of current officially approved names, and will be referred to as the Canadian Geographical Names Service data set.
